Small Apples

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

A couple of weeks ago during the sermon our minister brought up gossip. Normally when I hear someone preach about gossip it’s about talking about someone or what to do if someone wants to tell you some gossip. But he brought up gossip magazines and the like.

I don’t get any gossip magazines, but I do have E! online and People Online on my My Yahoo page. Which I read everyday.

I though, I should probably not read those.

But come Monday I left them on my page, with the reasoning that I like to see American Idol & Grey’s Anatomy “news”. Which isn’t really gossip.

Of course, it’s not like those are the only two things they talk about on those sights and even just reading the headlines, you can get most of the gossip that is going on with Sandra & Jesse or Lindsay.

Then I started thinking about Beth Moore’s fruit. And I thought, is reading this really making good fruit?

No. It’s not.

So I finally deleted it off my page.

Now in full disclosure, I was able to put on there the Watch with Kristin section from E! on line that only talks about TV show stuff and not the personal lives of the stars. So I can still get the scoop on my shows.

Is that good fruit or bad fruit? I don’t know. But it’s a step in the right direction. Like Beth says, it takes time to produce fruit so, we’ll decide on that later.

Finally it’s over

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

So the American Idol finale is tonight and I could not be less vested in either of these people. It has been no secret that this is the most boring season of American Idol ever.

They completely jumped the shark with Ellen being on there trying to say funny things that are not funny. Unless you are five.

No, I take that back, still not funny.

And I am so tired of Kara talking about feelings. It’s a singing competition, not an emoting competition.

So anyway, I am mildly rooting for Lee. I lost interest in Crystal ages ago. But the judges are still attempting to convince us that she is the greatest thing since Kelly Clarkston.

I question her song choices tonight, they seem very predictable. She kicked butt on that last song though. Not sure if it’s a number one hit, but she sang the pants of that song.

More than anything, I am really questioning her outfit choices. The first one looked like a bag lady, the second dress reminded me of a homecoming dress I wore somewhere around 91.

I missed Lee’s first song, but I thought he did good on the two I did see. The judges kind of dissed on him. But that’s just because they have been convinced that Crystal was going to win since day one, and want to make sure that happens.

Well, I need to go take my blood pressure. I hope all this excitement didn’t raise it too much.

Oscar Night!

Monday, March 8th, 2010

I watched about half of the Oscars last night. But I feel I didn’t miss out because I watched an hour and a half of red carpet coverage (it’s like pre-game).

The winners were rather predictable. But Here are some random thoughts about the evening…

Miley Cyrus needs to learn to stand up straight.

Bright Pink lipstick is apparently in.

I am bummed that Gabourey Sidibe did not win for her role in Precious, but am glad to see that Monique won. I just think Gabby is so sweet and funny in interviews and stuff.

I am really excited that Kathryn Bigelow won best director because she is the first female to do so. However, I wish she had done something different with her hair.

Kathy Ireland stands like a Barbie Doll.

Jennifer Lopez and Queen Latifa are tied for best dressed in my opinion.

Demi Moore’s dress matched her spray tan. That is weird.

I don’t like the reading part during best screenplay. It’s goofy.

I thought Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin did a good job as co-hosts.

Guess that’s all! Award season is over, now we just have go about making our own opinions.

American Idol

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

I am having a hard time getting into American Idol this year.

I don’t think the singing has been very good so far, for one. Maybe once we narrow things down a little I might get more into it.

Also, Ellen is not as annoying as Paula, but she seems…pointless. I’m not sure why she is there. She adds nothing to the judging and four opinions seem to go on a little long. Three is plenty.

Instead of making everybody cut 3 minute songs down to 1 minute and still requiring the show to be TWO HOURS long, how about we cut out a judge. That way the show can either be shorter or the kids can sing a little longer. Because I am over listening to someone say a bunch of words without really saying anything.

In other TV news I heard that Glee is going on tour. While I am not surprised, is it too much to ask to just be able to watch a show and not have it shoved down my throat at every opportunity?

I think I’m starting to not like TV. Is that possible? I seem somewhat angry at it.

I’m sorry TV, it’s not your fault. You have been very nice in the past. We’re just having a bad spell right now.

I am, however, loving Life Unexpected (on the CW of all channels). So there’s that.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

What are you big plans for Valentine’s Day? Going out to eat? Hope you like to wait or have enough dough to go someplace fancy enough to take reservations.

How about a Valentine’s Alternative?

I used to always have a Valentine’s dinner here at home with a couple of friends. The tradition kind of died off, but this year I am bringing it back!

I’ve got three couples I’ve invited. Still waiting to hear back for sure, babysitters and all that. It is so fun. You know I love to cook and entertain. It is way more fun than fighting crowds and dealing with overworked wait staff.

And the friends get a good meal (I hope!) and good times. So now I am in throws of menu planning and all that. I’ve got the salad figured out, and dessert (cheesecake, yum…) but still undecided on the main dish. But really, a good salad and a good dessert can go along way!

I love parties! I’m so excited.

The Answer Man

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

New Years Eve I watched The Answer Man with Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls) and Michigan native Jeff Daniels. It’s an independent movie that I had not heard of.  I like both of those people and it sounded interesting, so I gave it a try.

It was pretty good. Daniels plays a self-help author who is essentially a mess. He becomes a complete recluse and doesn’t want anyone to know who he is when he does go out.

He ends up becoming friends with a chiropractor who just moved to town (Graham) and her 7 year old son. He also accidentally befriends the owner of a used book store, even though he says he doesn’t want anyone in his life.

But of course he ends up alienating them because he is so crazy and then misses them when they are gone.

Jeff Daniels was really good in this movie. His crazy wasn’t over the top and very believable. The actor who play Kris the bookstore owner was also very good and heartbreaking.

My only issue with this movie was all the swears. I don’t like swears anyway, but there are some movies where it is kind of expected. This was not one of those movies. It was totally out of place and there was a lot of them (the big ones). It was distracting and took away from the otherwise good story and good acting. I just didn’t get it.

New Teeth, er, I mean Moon

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Last night I went to the movies with some ladies from work. New Moon.

It is imperative that you see this movie in a group, because it is way too embarrassing otherwise. Less people to make fun of you, since they were all there too.

I thought it was better than the first Twilight movie. But I also thought the 2nd book was better than the first. It also seemed like the upped the production value this time around.

There are a few things that are annoying and/or distracting, however. I found Bella (the main character, unfortunately) incredibly annoying, both in book form and the movie. For some reason I keep thinking she will be a less annoying character in the movie, but no, they play her pretty much on point.

The other annoying thing about Bella, well Kristin Stewart actually, is her giant chicklet teeth. Seriously, she should be building a dam somewhere.

I am also annoyed by Robert Pattinson’s teeth. At first I thought they were trying to give him some sort of pseudo fangs. But then I realized all the other vampires had perfect teeth. Turns out he just has bad teeth, and since the vampires are supposed to look “perfect”, this bothers me.

Well, that and the fact that I have issues with teeth. I find them very distracting. Even Jacob’s teeth were distracting. They seemed too white.

See? Issues.

The other thing about Edward that is weird (well other than the fact that I do not like him at all) is that his lips are red, like he just got done with a popsicle. Shouldn’t everything be pale, on account of the no blood flow and all?

Remind me again why I like these movies?

Perhaps I over-analyze. They are just meant to be fun, after all.

Wait until I review book 4, which I am almost done with. There are holes all over the place in that thing. Not to mention the fact that it is about twice as long as it needs to be. Apparently Stephanie Meyer fired her editor or something.

So, am I recommending New Moon? Absolutely, if you are a fan. Otherwise, you will just be irritated by all the bad teeth, and that’s no fun.

Movie Review:Star Trek

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Last night we watched the Star Trek movie and it was awesome! I had read online that it was one of the better action movies and that you did not have to be a Star Trek fan to enjoy it.

Both of those things turned out to be true. It has one of the most intense opening sequences ever, and gets you into the action straight away.

Obviously, Captain Kirk, Spock and the gang are iconic figures in pop culture, weather you watch the show or not. So seeing them as young people and how they all came together was a really great twist. I loved the interactions and the moments of comic relief.

I am probably going to start some nerd war with what I am going to say next (although I’m not too worried, I trust the nerds to fight it out where it really counts…in there parents basement over the D&D board). The Star Trek movie does everything right in the way that the new Star Wars movies did everything wrong.

The times of exposition and explanation are brief and go along with action instead of interrupting. The comic relief is character based and not forced. The graphics and costumes are impeccable.  The acting is spot on.

One of the best movies we’ve seen in a long time.

Disclaimer: We DID watch Paul Blart Mall Cop the night before, so my expectations may have been lowered a bit. It was not the worst comedy I’ve ever seen (Down Periscope) but it was quite possibly the stupidest premise ever.

Friday Nights

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Hubs put the first three seasons of Friday Night Lights on the Netflix streaming and I have been re-watching the first season.

I had forgotten how amazing that first season was. The 2nd and 3rd season were enjoyable, but nothing will beat this first season.

I can’t believe more people aren’t watching this show. The acting is so good and I so love the interactions between Coach Taylor and his wife. They are so sweet and funny.

I love this show!!

Slumdog Millionaire

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

I know I am about a year behind on this one, but we just watched Slumdog Millionaire last night.

It was so good! It absolutely lived up to all the hype and the reviews I had seen.

If you haven’t seen it, you should. I loved how the story was told. I loved how it used the flashbacks and how each question on the game show related to something in his life. It was so unique.

Also, It really shows you what life is like in India, but it doesn’t hit you over the head with it. I don’t know how to describe it, because it is sad, but there is humor. And the strength and ingenuity of the kids keeps you from only feeling sorry for them, you really root for them.

And the dance at the end leaves you on a high note. Loved that.
