Movie: Stranger than Fiction

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Last night we watched Stranger than Fiction with Will Ferrell on DVD. It was a really good movie. Much more low-key than normal WF movies, but with just enough crazy for him to let loose once in a while.

It was filmed in a interesting way, so it was very visually appealing. The story was also very different and interesting.

If you are not familiar with the story, it’s about this writer who is writing a story about a man. That man is Harold and he is real. So when she is writing about his life as it happens, he can hear her voice in his head. Of course, everyone thinks he is going crazy, but he is sure he’s not. With the help of a literary scholar, eventually he tracks her down and she finds out that he is a real person. There is also a quirky and funny love story between Harold and Ana, a baker that he met because he was auditing her taxes. Their interactions are sometimes awkward and often very sweet.

Like I said, it is very different. The actors are able to pull it off though, so it is believable and you are interested in what happens. We really enjoyed it. The humor is subtle, which is refreshing. Sometimes that in your face stuff gets old.

I absolutely recommend renting this one!

Quick Bread*

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Yesterday at work, at about 8:30 the printer stopped working.

Since I am level one tech support, I got called in for the repair.

Which requires turning the printer off and then back on again.

I have mad skillz.

So once it was back up and running, someone asked what was wrong with it. To which I replied; “It wasn’t ready to start the day yet. It needed a restart”.

Don’t we all feel that way sometimes?

*Quick Breads are made with out yeast. I have decided it was a good way to describe a post which is just a quick funny or a quick thought. Stay tuned for more!

The Commute

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Tuesday Day One: Commute to Work 35 minutes. Roads chosen, terrible. Chaos!! Commute Home: Chose different route. Construction. ugh. 45 minutes +.

Wednesday Day Two: Took the same route as the way home yesterday. No construction going this direction (yet). About 30 minutes. Had Class so I did not come directly home.

Thursday Day Three: Took the same route as yesterday. Seems to be the best so far. If there was not construction on the other side, It would be the best way home too. Tried a new route. About 40 minutes. There was a lot of winding around and stopping and starting. Also,  there were barrels indicating impending construction.  ugh.

Plan for tomorrow? I have one more route home to try, but likely will just have to deal with the construction on Route #2.

As a side story-

Wednesday there was a Jeep and a Van at the end of my street and the Van had it’s flashers on. I just assumed someone had car trouble.

Today, same Jeep and Van plus another car. What on Earth is all this about???!!!

Waiting for the school bus.

Seriously? 3 carloads of kids can’t stand on the corner together and wait for the bus? It’s not zero degrees in January people.

It’s kind of an indication of what our new neighborhood is like. On my way to work from the old house I pass through a variety (some good, some not so much) of neighborhoods, but all the kids stand on the corner and wait for the bus. Whatever the weather.

I am kind of going to miss seeing this one little dude everyday. He is almost always late for the bus, so he is running down the sidewalk with his little backpack on. I find little dudes in little backpacks incredibly funny.  His little friend is on the corner cheering him on. I can tell by his motions it’s something like “Hurry! Here it comes!” and he seems a little frantic.

Oh well, summer’s almost here anyway! Maybe Timmy will learn to tell time over the summer.

Here come the bus. Here come the bus.

Movie: Indiana Jones

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Monday we decided to take a much needed break and go see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull with our friend Squarepants.

It was, how shall I say…NOT AWESOME.

I have to say, I had high hopes, despite the terrible name (It’s sounds like some ill written book for 12 year olds).  I really wanted to like it. After we left I was still trying to convince myself it wasn’t that bad.

I told myself, you have not watched any Indy movies in a while. Maybe that’s how they were, you just remembered them differently.

But after mulling it over, I determined, that no, the old movies did not have HORRIBLE special effects and…

**spoiler alert**

And they did not have stupid aliens and stupid prairie dogs and stupid swinging monkeys.

Honestly, that “crystal” skull looked like it was made out of recycled Jellies .

Oooh, that’s my second Jellies reference in one day. Must have bad shoes on the brain. If you don’t remember Jellies they are like Crocs only WAY COOLER (and slightly more uncomfortable). Unlike Crocs, Jellies were intended to be worn to the mall. But I digress…

To sum up, here are the Top Five Things Wrong with the New Indiana Jones Movie:

5. Kate Blanchett’s accent

4. Aliens. Apparently they forgot what movie they were making. Aliens. I just had to say it again, because I still don’t believe it.

3. CG. I am over CG. It works great in Movies like Spiderman, but one of the great things about the “real” Star Wars and Previous Indy movies is the creative ways they made special effects. They used it just to use it in this movie and it was terrible. Did I mention the monkeys?

2. Lazy story telling. That is the best way I can describe it. It’s like they figured we would go anyway (which we did), so why try?

1. The lack of good Indiana Jones style action. I mean, isn’t that what we were all there for?

On a positive note, I liked that there was no swearing and I liked the campy humor. And Harrison Ford still looks great in the costume!

In other news…

Monday, May 26th, 2008

We are being attacked by some strange bugs. I bought enough bug killer to hopefully take out their whole bug city. They are freaking me out.

We have the old house pretty much cleared out. There is some plywood and my compost bin that has to come over yet. But that’s it. It was not nearly as traumatic as I thought it would be. I think it was just such a relief to FINALLY close and to FINALLY be in one house.

It is crazy quiet out here. We lived in a very quiet neighborhood before but we were still “in town”. There was always this undercurrent of city noises. When we go to bed here, there is no noise. Also, our appliances are much quieter so I don’t here the fridge or anything. I did hear it making ice the first night, which startled me a couple of times until I figured it out…

Marvin seems to be settling in. He is hanging around and going down to get snacks on his own. He lays under the bed quite a bit, but he did that before, so it’s normal (for him).

We have hot water! and a shower! So that’s where I’m heading next. Gotta get to bed, I have a new commute tomorrow. I have no idea which route I will be taking or how long it will take. I may try a few out this week and see what works best.

Becky says: Bugs are for outside!

Our first meal!

Monday, May 26th, 2008

I cooked our first meal in the new oven tonight.

It was Store Brand Boboli with Pepperoni and Ham.

Reminder: Becky says if you have to turn on the oven, it’s home-made.

Of course it’s 81 degrees, and yet I felt the need to turn on the oven. But luckily it only takes a few minutes to cook. I think it takes longer to pre-heat actually…

but HEY! IT’S NEW! and IT WORKS!

Believe me that is exciting stuff around here.

Marvin’s first night

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Last night was Marvin the Tailless Wonder’s first night in the new house. Since the trip over did not go so well, we were worried about how he would do. Although, I think he was just mostly embarrassed. Once we got him here and showed him where his litter and food was he started to explore some.

But then my parents came and my dad was working on things, and that is terrifying even on a good day. So I spent most of that time in the downstairs bathroom with the cat. But once that excitement was over, the exploring continued. He started with the downstairs and smelled every knook and cranny.

Then we got him to come upstairs where he smelled his way around the house, landing in his favorite spot, under the guest bed. He hung out there for a while but did come out and visit with us until bedtime.

At about 12:30 I heard him crying so I got up to go to the bathroom and see what was up. I thought maybe he couldn’t remember where his stuff was so I went downstairs with him to make sure.

Then all was quiet until about 4 am when hubs got up to go the bathroom and when he came back Marvie was crying his little face off. So I asked him what did you do to the cat?

We both got up to see what was up and Hubs showed him where is stuff was again. But as best as we could determine, he was up and thought we should be too. He cried for a few more minutes but eventually settled down until breakfast time.

Now he is lounging on his box looking out the big slider. Which is his new favorite activity. He is all about have windows down at his height.

Sold!

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

The closing actually went through! We no longer own 2 homes! YEAH!

I am speaking in exclamations because I am so excited!!

Meanwhile, this means we have to move in to the new house for serious. Too crazy! All this work and time and the moving part seems kind of all of a sudden. We have borrowed a van from work and rounded up another boy to carry things, so tomorrow is the big day.

We should be sleeping here tomorrow night!

We still can’t shower here, but that is just a minor detail.

or Cook (but that should be fixed soon)

or do laundry. Well, we can wash it but not dry it. Long story…

First dryer was broken. We took it back and got a new one but don’t have the energy to get it hooked up. I guess it wasn’t that long of a story.

Well, that is the scoop.  Busy day tomorrow!

Carrot Juice

So apparently Carrot Top is on the roids?

Hello from the new house!

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

My first post from inside the new house! We are sitting in camp chairs in the dining room watching Star Wars on our little bedroom TV and we are both on our laptops.

One of the responsibilities I have as Job Site Coordinator is to know where things are. There’s a lot of “Have you seen the hammer?” and “Do you know where the broom is?”

Surprisingly, most times I do.

We have a lot of empty spaces where things belong, but are not there yet. So we store things these spaces to keep them out of the way. The fun part is you get conversations like this:

Hubs: Have you see the shop-vac?

Me: It’s in the bathtub.

or

Hubs: Do you know where the stool is?

Me: It’s in the stove.

My dad asked me for the broom once and when I told him it was in the fridge, he just kind of looked at me funny.
