Updates

Bad Clothing Choices Update: The other day I made mention of Angelina wearing bedsheets for clothing. It was then pointed out to me that she had her sheet on backwards. Although, Em & I wondered if it was possible to wear a sheet backwards…

Vitamin D update: On a Photo Friday I talked about adding Vitamin D to my vitamin regimin in the hopes of helping my Seasonal Mood Disorder. Well, it seems to be working! Noticeable improvement in mood and energy level.  I readily admit it could be a possible placebo effect, but I don’t care. Whatever works to keep me from wanting to stay in bed all day with the covers over my head.

Not an update so much as rambling: We have big plans this weekend. We have been plugging away on the trim project this afternoon, but then we are off to a party! Our friends are having a Chinese NewYear party. I don’t know what that all entails, but it sounds fabulous!

Then of course tomorrow is my 2nd favorite holiday (after Thanksgiving), The SUPER BOWL. We are going to some friends house to watch and have snacks. I am a big fan of snacks.

I am voting for the Cardinals to win because I adore Kurt Warner. He came from Arena Football (which sadly no longer exists), so I love that.

Also, I could not tell you anyone who has ever won or lost a Super Bowl except Kurt Warner. I remember clearly when he won with the St. Louis Rams. At the end when they stick the mic in his face he just yelled a very emotional “Thank you Jesus!”

I’m not gonna lie, I teared up.

So what can I say? I’m rooting for the guy.

Photo Friday: How cute is this?

The Wonder all squirrled up in a blanket. Eyes covered as to not disturb his sleep.

True Art

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Tonight was a good night at Art Studio. Everyone was there (it’s been a little hit or miss lately, with the holidays and weather) so there was good energy, good conversation, and good art going on.

Unlike last week, which was cold, I was tired, and there was only one other person there. I just kind of messed around. Sometimes it helps to just get paint on paper, even if nothing comes of it. So that’s what I did.

This week I went back to that piece and put more paint on paper, but with a little more intention.  Now it is actually starting to look like something.

I then discussed the direction of this painting and what it still needed with one of the ladies in class. We decided that it should sit until next week (sometimes it helps to give them a rest).

Then she said “You will probably figure it out in your sleep.”

I looked at her kind of funny, and she said “You dream about your paintings sometimes don’t you?”

I do.  I guess I hadn’t remembered mentioning that before, but clearly she did.

I told her that I did sometimes dream about them, or worse lay awake thinking about them.

She said “That means you are true artist. The art is in you.”

She then went on to say she only thinks about her work while she is working on it. Not much before, and not at all after. She likes to paint but says she is not a true artist. It’s not IN her. It is just her hobby (I should mention at this point, she is very good at her “hobby”).

I wasn’t quite sure what to make of all this. But I do know, I liked that someone thought that I was a “true artist”.

What’s there to talk about other than trim, trim, and more trim

Did I mention we’re doing trim?

Since my life has been mostly consumed by (wait for it…) trim, I thought I might talk about something a little more exciting.

Like why has Angelina Jolie started wearing dresses that look like they are made of sheets? Is she suddenly taking fashion advice from Gone with the Wind and making clothes out of whatever she can find around the house?

Meanwhile, Evan Rachel Wood looks amazing in this green dress. She win first prize for color choice that best compliments her hair and skin. If she doesn’t get best dressed, then I am not even sure why we have a contest.

Photo Friday: The Big D

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

I recently read that adding an extra dose of vitamin D warded off seasonal mood disorder (or February, as we call it here in MI). So in addition to my multi-vitamin and calcium, I am now on the D.

Here’s to trying to ingest sunshine! Bottoms Up!

Recipe: “Fresh” Salsa

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

The other day our rep that brings the burritos came in and it occured to me that I don’t think I ever shared his salsa recipe with you all.

Which is a shame because it is my favorite kind of recipe, EASY but so good you will wow your friends and neighbors.

If you are missing summer fresh summer flavors this will help you make it through these long winter months.

Ingredients:

1 BIG can (or 2 small cans) whole tomatoes

1 med onion cut in quarters

1-3 jalepenos cut in half and de-seeded and de-veined (I recommend starting with one and adding more if needed, unless you know you like it hot. If you are using home-grown peppers, seriously, start with one.)

1 lime cut in 1/2 for juicing

Some salt (I would guess about teaspoon)

a bunch of fresh cilantro

I use the food procesor, but you can also use the blender. I like to do the onion, jalepenos, some of the lime first to get med sized chucks. Then add the rest of the lime, the tomatoes and salt. For the cilantro, I just guesstimate about where the leaves end and cut the stems off. It’s ok to have some stem. Throw that in with the tomatoes and stuff. Blend or process until it is a consistiancy you like. Taste. Add more salt or peppers if needed, remembering the flavors will come out slightly more as it is refridgeratd.

It is so good and the cilantro gives it a nice fresh taste. I love it on chips, in wraps, with tacos, you name it.

Try mixing some with a little ranch dressing and put it in a tortilla with some turkey, avacado, cheese, and lettuce and you will never eat a turkey sandwich again.

You know you’re from Michigan

Then noticed everyone else had the same idea.

Hope

Monday, January 19th, 2009

When O bama first starting running for president it was all about Hope. And I thought to myself, that seems like kind of a flimsy campaign platform. I mean, I’m really looker for someone who is a “doer” more than a “hoper” when it comes to leading the country. You know what they say “you can hope in one hand…”

Fast forward to tonight, the eve of  Inauguation day.

I now find myself using the word “hope” a lot when it comes to the president elect.

I really hope he can do it.

I hope he can fix this mess.

I hope he can create jobs and bring jobs back to America.

I hope he can turn things around.

I hope he can get us out of Iraq without making a bigger mess.

A tall order, I know, but he’s the one that started it with all this hope business.

Hoping for things to be better, as desperate as that may seem, is better than the things we usually hope for here in Michigan.

I hope my car starts.

I hope my car doesn’t die.

I hope I don’t lose my job.

I hope I don’t lose my house.

I hope my friend/family member/etc doesn’t experience any of the above.

He has a big task ahead of him, and I think he might be a little crazy for wanting to take it on. But I honestly hope he goes down as the greatest president ever, because that would mean things were better after he had his turn.

Book Review: The Kite Runner

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

I just finished The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (under the book to movie category on my bingo card).

This book follows a boy’s journey into manhood starting in Afganastan and ending in America. It begins in the country before the Russians and before the Taliban, then taking us through those journeys.

People have said that this book will one day be considered a classic, which is quite the statement. I think partly the timing of the book adds to this idea. It came out just after we went into Afganastan following September 11.

It sheds light onto an area of the world I know little about and the people who live there.

The book has very complex themes of right vs. wrong, religion vs. tradition, politics, class, race, love, guilt, and redemption. However, it is not difficult or overwhelming to read. It never loses sight of the human emotion and connection to those concepts. The main character is flawed and sometimes makes poor decisions, which makes the story even more compelling.

There are parts that are painful to read and will make you uncomfortable.

I ended the book feeling incredibly grateful for growing up in America and heartsick for those living in war torn countries.

Totally Scientific Book Rating: 4

Sunday Quick Bread

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

The sun is out today which is doing wonders for my mood. Even though I am inside, just seeing it out the window is a delight.

I have spent much of my time today “puttering”. Other than the last little while that has been spent under a blanket, cat on the lap, reading a book. I just made some tea to warm my cold hands and am having a few animal crackers for a snack.

Is there any better way to spend a Sunday afternoon?
