The Splendid Table

Monday, August 31st, 2009

One of my favorite things about having an Ipod (Thanks again Stevo!) is listening to podcasts.

My current addiction is The Splendid Table. I have listened to a bunch of old ones and can’t wait for new ones to appear.

It’s kind of like the Food Network but for radio, which sounded wierd at first, but I love it!

Of course, I love all things food. And I also love tips (even if I don’t implement them), so this is great!

I was just checking out there website and now I am addicted to that! There are recipes and books, and stuff about travel.  I love all those things.

I just signed up for the newsletter.

It looks like a lot of the recipes might be outside hubs palate, but I am the master recipe re-worker.

One armed sweater

Here’s Marvin checking out the striped sweater that sacrificed an arm for my Sweater Guy.

Sweater Guy

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

My two days back at work after vacating were horrible and a complete shock to the system. So when I got home from work on Friday, I made this little sweater guy.

I needed to make a new friend out of some cuddly materials.

I saw these sweater friends somewhere on the interweb, so I bought this striped sweater quite some time ago at the resale shop with the intent of making a little sweater guy.

It was really easy. I added a little heart shaped button that I had laying around on him for extra love.

In Da UP, Eh?

While we were getting around to head up to TQ Falls a “genuine yooper” stopped by to sell us some fire wood.

We know he was a genuine yooper because he told us about 3 times.

After we bought way more wood than we could possibly burn, he wanted to tell us a story or two or five.

He kept saying “well I’ll let you go, but I could tell you stories…well, just one more…”

His stories were genuine yooper stories alright, which means they were about 1/10 true.

He has a soona (or sauna to those of us who are not genuine yoopers) where he sits and drinks beer (sounds dangerous).

Hubs made his day by giving him our empty pop cans.

“When you’re a yooper, you take what you can get.”

Or so I’m told.

Camping Menu

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Since we were car camping on our Up North Adventures (UNA) we were able to eat better than when we hike.  Here’s what we had-

Sunday Dinner-After setting up camp we had Greek Style wraps. I pre-grilled chicken with Mrs. Dash and sliced it. I pre-made a cucumber sauce with yogurt and pesto. We wrapped them up in flat bread with feta cheese and had some leftover pasta salad on the side. I wanted something quick and easy since we had been driving all day.

Monday Breakfast-Egg scramblers. I pre-cut peppers, onions and mushrooms. We mixed them up with some scrambled eggs and pre-cooked bacon.Throw some cheese on top and you are good to go.

Monday Lunch- Turkey Sandwiches with more pasta salad, chips, cookies and snacks.

And of course we had ice cream before we left. It’s a rule.

Monday Dinner-Spicy Chicken pockets. Again, pre-cooked chicken with my special spice rub, thrown in some foil with peppers, rice (pre-cooked), beans, salsa, onions. We made a fire and put the pockets on the coals while the boys went to get more ice. By the time they got back, they were done. We put some cheese and sour cream on and it was super tasty.

Tuesday-We planned bagel sandwiches, but had granola bars. We ate a late breakfast on the island and had ice cream for lunch. We had dinner in St. Ignace. I had planned on sausage/potato pockets, but it we didn’t get off the island until dinner time and were starving (on account of the ice cream for lunch).

Wednesday Breakfast-We had the bagel sandwiches (scrambled eggs, cheese and ham on a bagel). They were really filling.

For lunch we stopped at a pizza place hubs and I found last time we were up there camping, and I have to say, it hit the spot.

Not Forgotton

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Hubs reminded me that after TQ Falls we actually headed up to Whitefish Point before going back to camp.

So many adventures I forgot where we were! I believe they also wanted to charge us like $10 to visit the Shipwreck Museum.

Honestly, how do you travel with a family?

Considering the museum looked smaller than my house, we decided it did not appear to be worth the asking price.

Besides the fact the the coolest thing was probably a giant 2 story rudder that was outside and we could see for free.

We stuck our toes and fingers in Lake Superior (that’s about all you can stand-brrrrr!) and checked out the drift wood and stones.

They have the best stones up there. They are so smooth from being in the water and and awesome colors.

Hummingbirds

For those of you who feed the Hummingbirds, make sure your feeders are full. They are fueling up for their trip South.

Up North Adventure

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

We are back from all our adventures. Back at work today (blech) and trying to catch up on laundry (never going to get done).

We had good weather for the most part. Sunday when we arrived at camp on Lake Michigan it was a little chilly. That night was cold sleeping. We were all bundled up in hats and sweatshirts inside our sleeping bags.

Monday morning we dressed in jeans since we had been so cold the night before and we were heading further North to Tahquamenon Falls. Once we arrived, it was decidedly warmer and we changed into shorts and t-shirts after our picnic lunch in the parking lot.

The falls were crazy fast and areas that had been dry before were now wet. I guess that is what 17 feet of snow will do for you. Hubs rowed (and I use that term loosely) over to the island walked all the way around. J-rod rowed (again subject to interpretation) us back. We checked everything out including going up and down like 200 steps (not an exaggeration).

Totally wiped out we headed back to camp where it had warmed up and sleeping was perfect (temperature wise). We took a quick “bath” in the lake (Brrrrr!) after dinner.

Up early we headed off to the Island. It looked like a storm was brewing and the lake was very choppy at camp. We decided to just have granola bars to avoid any mishaps on the boat (if you get my drift). We also dressed in jeans and long sleeve shirts.

However, since we live in Michigan, weather can be different five minutes away and the lake was totally calm on the other side of the bridge.

Before biking around the Island we fueled up on some eggs and toast at a breakfast joint on the main drag. Then we hit a T-shirt Shop and probably annoyed the clerk with our sillyness. They only had swim shorts for the boys, which we decided were better than no shorts at all. I bought a Mackinaw Island t-shirt. They only had one kind of shorts appropriate for girls (although I think they were boys) and they were the ugliest shorts ever created.

So N and I both bought a pair. We looked like twin softball coaches.

Now that we were dressed to a T, we went on our island adventures, which involved spending $10 on each activity. I think because you are trapped on the island, they figure they can gouge you for everything.

Even the map cost $1.

We spent the whole day there and had a ton of fun. Just as we were getting ready to call it a day it started to rain. Perfect timing!

After dinner we headed towards Sleeping Bear. We decided we could not make it all the way before dark and found a campground in Charlevoix. It was right on the lake and was really cool (despite driving past a cement factory to get there). It was cold on the lake side, so we stayed in the woods.  Had it been warmer and had there been more time I would have loved to hang out there.

We had to set up in a little rain, but it stopped about bedtime. It was warm enough that I slept outside my sleeping bag most the night.

We packed up early and headed to the Dunes. My MIL says that Mackinac Island is her Mecca. I would say Sleeping Bear is mine. I absolutely love it there. We were tired and J & N wanted to get back home, so we didn’t stay long. We were able to show them our new favorite spot, Pyramid Point, which you have to see with your own eyes. Pictures just don’t do it justice.

I was glad to home (and shower!) but also a little sad to leave. It is so relaxing up there.

Party Planning

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Today was my last day of work for a week! Love that. Especially after this week, but we won’t go into that.

The final preparations are under way for our party and camping trip to follow. Food prep has begun, clean up is finishing up, and the cat is very suspicious.

On the menu for Saturday Night-

Deep Fried Turkey (Lil’ 9lb fella who will fit in the fryer)

Grilled Pork Roast (From the meat market in the old hood. They have one they season and it is worth the trip across town)

MIL’s secret recipe Mac N Cheese (2 pans, these boys could eat it 3 meals a day)

Corn bread (loaf and muffin, don’t ask)

Pasta Salad (supplied by a visitor-THANK YOU!!)

My Mom’s famous baked beans (She made them and brought them over. Best Mama ever!)

Brownies

Grilled Zucchini

Chips

Veggies and Dip

Cole Slaw (that I forgot to buy, so will have to get when we go into town tomorrow)

The best thing about a party is all the friends, the second best thing is the FOOD!

I’m sure this will set him straight

So I guess Brett Favre is un-retired again. Seriously, this guy is an embarrassment.

I don’t mind that he wants to play football. It’s just that he keeps saying he doesn’t want to but then does anyway in these last minute publicity stunts.

It’s getting old. But apparently not old enough for every news outlet to over report on it. Shows that have nothing to do with sports are talking about it. I lost interest 6 retirements ago.

Back in the day he was on my top five, but at this point the guy can’t even see the list from where he’s at. I can’t have this kind of behavior on the top five. It’s a very exclusive list created by the utmost in superficial standards.

Let’s see who is still on my top five…

5. Matthew Mcconaughey: A long time top fiver, Matthew was #1 for ever, but recently got demoted to #5 because he is a little bit crazy. Not Tom Cruise crazy, but it’s a fine line. He should take a note from Favre.

4. Ryan Gosling: Added after watching The Notebook. I really thought that movie was going to be stupid, but I cried my eyes out and totally got a crush on this guy. He kicked Will Smith off the list.

3. Daniel Craig: AKA James Bond. I have to admit, I loved Pierce Brosnan as 007 and was not happy when I heard he was being replaced. But Pierce never made the top five.

2. Steve Young: A long time top fiver, Steve has always been in the top 2 except for a short stint a couple of years ago he dropped to #5 due to a bad haircut.

1. Kyle Chandler:  I do love me some Coach Taylor. Also, Friday Night Lights is the best show on TV.
